We all have a misconception when it comes to Vaseline and unrefined petroleum jelly or petrolatum. There’s a huge difference between unrefined petroleum jelly and Vaseline. In olden days, petrolatum was used to heal burns. It was used as an ointment and also as a lubricant. People later came to know that unrefined petrolatum can cause problems, in worst case scenario, it was said that it could be carcinogenic. Also, refined form of petrolatum is being used in many cosmetic products including lotions. But Vaseline is a purified form of petroleum jelly. It is triple-purified and refined to remove any carcinogenic components. So it poses low threat to people.
