Commercial toothpastes contain a number of unwanted ingredients that are not completely skin or body friendly like sulfates, sweeteners, fluoride, hydrogen peroxide, titanium dioxide etc. Did you know that you can make your own egg shell toothpaste at home that too with a good amount of calcium to keep your teeth and gums strong?
There are a lot of research papers on the effectiveness of egg shell powder on teeth and gums and you can totally use it to make your very own egg shell toothpaste! Below is a recipe for the same and ways in which you can customize it –

Egg Shell Powder
The egg shell powder is a good source of calcium and magnesium that helps strengthen the enamel and also help reduce the stains and yellowing. Makes your teeth stronger gradually and also helps lighten them to a good extent due to its gentle exfoliating properties. The composition of egg shells is quite similar to that of our teeth and egg shells also helps remineralise them effectively. Also great for cavities.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is quite known for its teeth whitening and polishing effect. It also has anti microbial and anti-inflammatory properties and it also nourishes the gums and keeps them healthy and stronger. Helps buff away stains and plaque making your teeth brighter and whiter over time.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint essential oil has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and refreshing properties. It also freshen up your breath and masks pungent mouth odor. Also makes your gums stronger and refreshes your entire mouth including inner cheeks and tongue.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is known to be a little harsh on the teeth and gums but when used correctly, it can actually be less abrasive than most of the commercial toothpastes out there in the market. When used correctly, baking soda can help exfoliate and remove the plaque and stains from your teeth and it also helps brighten and whiten your pearly whites.
METHOD:
Things you need-
- 4 tablespoons egg shell powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- Enough coconut oil
- 10 drops peppermint oil
Directions-
To make this toothpaste, you need egg shell powder. To make egg shell powder, simply wash and sun dry egg shells and make sure they are completely dry and there is no water in it. In a mixing bowl, add egg shell powder, baking soda and peppermint oil. Add an enough coconut oil to make a spreadable paste. Mix it really well until it is completely lump free and store it in an airtight jar. To use, take a small quantity on your brush and use it to brush your teeth as you normally would.
NOTE:
- Patch test before had to make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used in the egg shell toothpaste recipe.
