Flaxseeds are quite known for their high omega-3 fatty acids and folic acid content. They are super healthy when consumed but did you know that flaxseeds are also great for your skin and hair? Flax gel or flaxseed gel is popularly used for skincare and overall hair health and it is one of my favorite DIY beauty remedies to do. I very regularly use flax gel in my beauty routine and today I wanted to share how I make my flax gel for skin and hair –
BENEFITS OF USING FLAX GEL FOR SKIN AND HAIR:
- Flax gel has healing properties that heals the skin and also helps fight common skin problems like acne, white has, blackheads and uneven skin tone.
- It also helps repair dry skin patches because it has great moisturizing properties. Improves skin tone, reduces dark circles and prevents fine lines and wrinkles.
- Flax gel also adds a beautiful radiant glow to the skin and makes your skin look overall super healthy and nourished.
- Just as flax gel moisturizes your skin, it works equally well for the hair and also helps boost hair growth. Has great anti microbial properties that treats dandruff and is also said to show some positive effects for alopecia.
- Coats your hair, nourishes your scalp and provides omega-3 fatty acids. Boost hair growth and as a reflective shine.
- Flax gel has anti-inflammatory properties that makes it a great soothing and calming ingredient for skin and hair.
MY WAY OF MAKING FLAX GEL:
Things you need-
- Handful whole flax seeds
- 2-3 cups water
- Few drops essential oil of your choice
Directions-
To make flax gel, place a saucepan on low heat and add in flaxseeds. Pour water and let it simmer until water turns a little sticky and stretchy. Make sure that you do not overcook this or it will be difficult to strain the gel out of this mixture. If you feel you have over cooked and the water has reduced considerably, add in some more water and repeat the process. Use a strainer with wider holes to strain the gel out and your flax gel is ready. I like to add in few drops of lavender essential oil or rose essential oil. If you have acne or dandruff, you can add in tea tree essential oil. For boosting hair growth you can add and rosemary essential oil. Feel free to add in any essential oil that works well for your skin and hair. Store this in the refrigerator for over a month and use it as and when required.
WAYS TO USE FLAX GEL FOR SKIN AND HAIR:
- Use flax gel directly to massage your facial skin and also use it to massage your body before a shower. If you have acne prone skin, add in few drops of tea tree essential oil. On normal skin to just add a beautiful glow, add in few drops of lavender essential oil. Massage for a few minutes and rinse it off.
- If you have acne prone skin or if you want to use this as a spot treatment for acne, add a pinch of cinnamon powder to flax gel and use it on your acne spots with a Q tip. Do this before bedtime and wash it off the next morning.
- For blackheads and whiteheads, you can apply a generous amount of this flax gel on your facial skin and take a steam for 5-10 minutes. Wipe it off and using a blackhead remover, extract all the whiteheads and blackheads and it should come right off.
- For dandruff, at few drops of tea tree essential oil to flax gel and massage this gel on your scalp and hair. Use a shampoo after an hour.
- If your hair is heat damaged or very rough and lacks shine, you can directly massage generous amount of flax gel on your scalp and hair and wear a hot towel for 30 minutes. Use a shampoo and let your hair air dry or style as you normally would.
- You can also use flax gel as a styling gel because it does have some hold and it makes your hairstyle last longer.
