On a nutshell, hair cleansers need to be incorporated in our hair care rituals as they are made with very mild formulas. Here we have a similar mild formula for hair cleansing called hair cleansing powder!

Benefits of the ingredients used in the Hair Cleansing Powder
Shikakai powder
One of the best things about shikakai powder is that it adds shine and softens the hair naturally. Heals and soothes the itchy dry scalp and promotes hair growth which is the best part. Works best on lice and treats dandruff. Shikakai powder acts as a mild detangler and natural cleanser. It helps in slowing down the premature graying of hair. Works best in making your hair stronger and thicker.
Reetha powder
We all know that dandruff is the prime cause for hair fall. Reetha powder is known for curbing the hair fall by preventing the dandruff. It contains natural saponins that help break down oil and dirt. Reetha powder controls dandruff and promotes hair growth due to its Tridosha property. Provides an excellent nourishment to strengthen the hair follicles and conditions the scalp.
Amla powder
The fatty acid present in the amla penetrates deep into the hair follicles making the hair healthier, soft, shinier and voluminous. It has high iron and keratin content thus helps with hair growth. It stops hair thinning and by adding into your diet even helps relives stress and helps from graying hair. Amla is great for treating dandruff due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and it even relieves scalp itchiness by restoring optimum pH values of scalp.

Ingredients to form paste
- It’s completely up to you what ingredients you wish to use to make the paste depending on your hair needs. Rose water can be used if you have oily scalp and have dandruff. Use Curd if you need shiny and silky smooth hair with moisturized scalp. Green tea mixture can be used if you are in need of hair growth and to get rid of thinning of hair. Use black tea mixture if you want to restore the natural hair color and to promote healthy scalp.
Method
Things you need:
- Shikakai powder 4 tbsp
- Reetha powder 4 tbsp
- Amla powder 4 tbsp
Note that – All the powders to be mixed in equal quantity.
- Rose water/ curd/ green tea/ black tea (Based on your choice and adjust the quantity as per hair length)
Directions:
To prepare this hair cleansing powder, take a small mixing bowl and add 4 tbsp of Shikakai powder, 4 tbsp of Reetha powder and 4 tbsp of amla powder. Give it a very good mix, pass it through a sieve to achieve fine powder and keep this dry mixture in an airtight jar. To this dry mixture you can add either rose water or curd or green tea or black tea decoction to form the paste as per your choice and requirements. On the day of your bath, just take some amount of it and wash your hair with this hair cleansing agent to remove oil and dirt.
Transition phase by switching to “No-poo” journey
As I have mentioned above that your hair do becomes oily, flaky and greasy for few days/weeks after quitting shampoos but natural hair cleanser takes time to get back your hair to natural form. So try switching to low-poo’s i.e., sulfate-free shampoos for few days for an easy transition.
Here are few things that would help you in your no-shampoo journey –
- Use wide toothed wooden combs
- Brush away oils with boar bristle brush
- Use dry shampoos to remove excess oil and refresh the scent of your hair
- Switch to pillow cases
- Try apple cider vinegar rinse (diluting it with water is must)
Note
- Can adjust the quantity of products as per the hair length.
- Use the freshly prepared paste in order to maintain the scalp health.
- Maintain consistency to see the best results.
- Check if you are allergic to any of the ingredient used in the hair cleanser powder.
- Use organic products/ ingredients for best results and to maintain the scalp health.
- Do not expect instant results in case of hair care especially since hair growth period is very less and can vary from person to person.
